Ear acupuncture is a well renowned and documented method since the first acupuncture texts (“The yellow emperor”) around 2500 year ago. Its theory is based on the observation that when the body is out of balance, it will be reflected in the ears and that the ears play an important role in treatment of pain and disease thanks to their connection to the nervous system. The ears are said to have many specific reflex points that are connected to the whole body through the nervous system and this discovery was later “re-discovered” in Europe by Paul Nogier in the 1950s. Nogier developed a treatment method based on the reflexology of the ear that in the 1990s was even recognised by the WHO.
Based on this knowledge of the powerful reflexological properties of the ears in the 1960s a novel method for the treatment of psychological conditions including anxiety, stress, addition was developed by the American psychiatrist Michael Smith. The method developed by Micheal Smith at the Lincoln Hospital i South Bronx New York is recognised as NADA and it is a standardised, non -verbal method for treating a number of conditions and it consists on the stimulation of 5 specifics ear acupuncture points. This stimulation for 45 minutes has, over time, proved its efficacy for treatment of stress, abstinence, aggression, anxiety, sleeping problems and many similar or linked conditions.
At My Health acupuncture clinic we work with both the Nogier method for pain treatment and the NADA method for ease of stress, anxiety and other linked conditions.
